What will we do?

Some of you wonder what we will be doing this September course.
I am so excited.  This summer I had the opportunity to go to Seattle and while I was there I went to the Science Museum and Seattle's Art Museum.

At the Science Museum they had a rare exhibit of King Tut's Tomb.  Over 100 objects found in his tomb.  I was so taken back by the colors and the workman ship.  I wanted to do something, I wanted to teach just a tad about this historical time so we will be making a Pharoh's mask.  This will be a two class period because we will be using paper mache.

I then went to the Seattle Art Museum and talk about inspiration.  WOW!  One of the things that was on display was some Aborigini work.  I wasn't allowed to take pictures in this area.  This picture I got before I was told no pictures, but you can see an art piece in the back ground.    The Aborigini work included lots of dots and lines and we will recreate our own Aborigini Art piece.

Other things we will be learning is complimentary colors and using acrylic paints.  Drawing and using oil pastels.  And the art of Jasper Jones.

I can't wait to start classes and see the amazing work your kids will create.

WHY ART

Via the Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland
This article shows all of the benefits associated with children learning art while they are young and the impact it has on their lives.
  1. Art stimulates both sides of the brain.
  2. 33% of kids are visual learners.
  3. There are studies that show that kids, who make art, read better and get better grades in science and mathematics.
  4. The kids learn by using their senses and art is ideal in this process
  5. The kids need a place to express themselves at school.
  6. Art promotes self esteem
  7. Art encourages kids to give more attention to the physical space that surround them.
  8. Art develops hand and eye coordination.
  9. Art stimulates perception.
  10. Art teaches them to think openly. It represents a culture of questioners more than a culture of responders.
  11. Art teaches that there is more than one solution for a problem.
  12. Art teaches kids to think creatively to solve problems.
  13. Kids can share and reflect on their work of art and learn something about the world they live in.
  14. When art is integrated with the other subjects in the curriculum, kids commit more to the learning process.
  15. In the process of doing art, the child is exposed to different possibilities, to discover and to freedom, this way they avoid falling into the control and the predictability of the conventional education in the United States of today.
  16. Art nourishes the human soul. One feels good doing it.
  17. Art brings the cultural resources of the community into the class.
  18. Art involves parents and tutors in the school, inviting them to participate as volunteers in diverse activities.
  19. Art provides a common ground across racial stereotypes, barriers and prejudices.
  20. Art is valuable all by itself.

My UVU Art Camp Experience

This past week I taught a week long, 2 hr a day, Art Camp at UVU Continuing Ed.
I had 17 students, the youngest was 5 and the oldest was 12.
It was a lot of fun and the kids got to learn and use different types of materials, from oil pastels, soft pastels, acrylic paint on different types of canvases to paper mache.
They learned about Monet to Wayne Theibaud.
At the end of the week we had our Art Show where they got to show off to their parents, siblings and other family member's their creative and artistic abilities.

I painted this for a teacher's door for Teacher Appreciation.
Inspired by Ramero Britto

I went to Josh's 5th grade class today.
Taught the kids about oil pastels, and then they rubbed it
with a Q-tip. I taught them about blending.
We then outlined the lines with black glue.
